Check this out! How to recognize mental illness issues!
Three major areas of concern for men—especially the unhoused
This article does a great job of making very clear three of the areas with which your clients may need immediate help. For example, men can face challenges of depression, anxiety, and alcohol abuse.
In a Harvard Health article, Matthew Solan makes the point that “People too often don't recognize that an underlying mental health problem is why they feel unwell.” Solan reminds us that a recent study mentioned 75% of adults face the challenges of mental illness.
Solan also reminds us that “A depressed man may gain or lose weight, eat more or less than usual, have difficulty concentrating, and have trouble sleeping or sleep more than usual. He also may battle fatigue and low energy…”
In the unhoused population, specifically, these complications of one’s daily life can be disastrous.
Anxiety and alcohol abuse are two other areas of concern. For the unhoused, these are exacerbated by lack of good hygiene, lack of reliable and safe locations to get enough sleep, and lack of access to safe places to keep medications, store leftovers for secure food sources, and support systems from reliable persons who can help with rides, encouragement, food, money, and safety.
Adult men face these three areas, especially. Unhoused men? Multiply this…..
